Description
A lush microclimate created by a box canyon where sheer sandstone walls and rock outcrops are laced with seasonal waterfalls. A two-mile trail sheltered beneath a canopy of towering trees delivers you to this honeycombed canyon created by the intricate weathering of iron ores in sandstone. You'll discover rock shelters and caves that were inhabited by Native Americans some 10,000 years ago. And, of course, the canyon's cool climate is perfect for hemlock -- these tall evergreens with short needles and small cones simply thrive in this environment and so will you. Hemlock Cliffs is located west of Highway 37 about two miles north of Interstate 64.
Trip Report
I had a great time here during a solo trip in late fall. It's a small area, but large scenery wise. This place is absolutely perfect for families with children of any age. The trail is well constructed and easy to navigate by following the numerous white diamonds painted on the trees. One thing I didn't know at the time was another location called Messmore Cliffs can be visited by taking an unmarked trail located near the high cliffs warning sign intersection. I hear it's spectacular and will try to find it myself sometime. If your looking for a great day trip, you've found it.
Location
From I-64 take the IN 37 exit north about 2 miles. The road climbs a steep grade, just before it begins to level off, the entrance to Hemlock Cliffs is on the left. Be careful, may miss this the first time. Turn left and follow the road to the first intersection, continue left. At the next intersection, continue right. At the "T" in the road, continue to the right. Look for the Hoosier National Forest sign. Park at the gravel picnic area lot.

There are no facilities, bring everything you need. English is 10.5 miles away, just go back to 37 and head north.
