Lake Mauzy - Kentucky Kayaking

The only interesting feature
Cypress Trees

Description

Lake Mauzy is a small (approx 100 acre) lake/impoundment located in Western Kentucky. It is part of the Higginson Henry Wildlife Management Area and is maintained by the KY Department of Wildlife Management. The lake is surrounded by wooded area interspersed with gravel roads and horse trails. The shoreline of the lake consists primarily of mud flats with numerous downed trees and stump beds. There is a large area of rip rap located over the levee that makes up one side of the lake. The fishing at Lake Mauzy is superb with numerous bass, crappie and channel catfish. The best fishing is found near any of the numerous trees that are submerged in the water and also about 15-20 out from the levee. The paddling is easy (flatwater) and because motorized boats are limited to 10hp or less you do not have to worry about being run over!

Trip Report

Nothing special here folks. This is not a trip worthy of traveling any distance for. The only reason I ended up here was after coming back home from another trip. I was passing within 5 miles of the place and figured, what the heck it's a WMA and should be somewhat interesting. It's extremely small and the entire shoreline can be paddled in an hour or two. Nothing at all spectacular about the shoreline scenery. This is your basic lake where the locals head outdoors for the weekend. I hear the fishing is pretty good though. Overall, the place gets a big zero for every aspect a kayaker would want except fishing. Don't bother for any other reason!

Location

From Morganfield, head east on 56 for 5 miles. You will see a sign for Lake Mauzy on the right. Turn right and the lake is about 1/2 mile.

Facilities

Lakeside camping is free, primitive, and no permits are required. There are no designated campsites, just pull off the gravel road and camp in one of the clearings. The only restroom is a public portajon. You should plan to bring everything you need for the trip or you can find everything you need in Morganfield which is only 6 miles northwest on Highway 56. For an outstanding meal, the Feedmill restaurant is available on Highway 60 about 2 miles east of Morganfield.
